Chatting with: Upholsterer Sara Reetham

Sara Reetham's knitted chair make can be found in issue 9 (out now!). We caught up with the designer to find out more.

In issue 9 of Crafty (out now in WH Smith, all major supermarkets, Hobbycraft and at, we show you how to use knitted swatches to upholster a chair - designed by the very lovely Sara Reetham. We had a quick chat to find out even more about her.

What was the first thing you upholstered?

It was an old wooden kitchen stool that I reupholstered with stretchy leopard print fabric. A lot more tasteful than it sounds I promise. Although this stool is now recovered with a vintage tea towel. That's the beauty of reupholstery!

Why do you find upholstery so appealing?

I have always preferred old over new when it comes to furniture, both design-wise and for the character it has accumulated in its years. When you take something shabby and unloved (even better if purchased for mere pennies) and can transform it and potentially a whole room by just changing the fabric, its the most satisfying feeling. I can't really explain why but I just have a thing about chairs, I think its because they are useful to have around as well as just looking pretty.

How tricky was this project to do?
Working with any material you haven't worked with before can often be a bit challenging but it helps if you are prepared to go with the flow a little bit.

Have you always been creative?

I guess so. My mum is quite a creative soul too, so I remember her making Fimo models and doing other crafty activities with us when we were younger. I was definitely very 'arty' at school but much to my art teacher's dismay I took a very different route at uni so had quite a few 'uncreative' years.

If you could only do one craft for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Chairs, chairs, chairs. Renovating and reupholstering. Because I love chairs!

What do you do when you're not making stuff?

My 'day job'. Otherwise chasing my little girl around trying to get her to do stuff she doesn't want to do, or hiding in cupboards and jumping out to make her laugh.

If you want to find out how to make Sara's knitted swatch chair, make sure you get a copy of Crafty issue 9 - out right now!
